- They are answering questions even for non registered user.

- The option leave mail on server in the freeware version allows you

- Key symptom there. Sounds like you don't have your outward gateway defined.
- This is the address of the box that routes from your local network to the
- internet.

-
- Don't know quite what kind of system you are describing here. TCU gives me a
- permanent IP address and only has one terminal server at present that accepts
- dialins. I have no experience with dynamic IP address assignment systems, but
- it sounds like that's what you have.
-
- >2. Could it be the Winsock setup? Should "netmask" and "gateway" be set
- >to something other thatn "0.0.0.0"? If so, this can only be done by
- >editing the INI file, not within the Setup dialog itself.
-
- This is a major problem - no gateway defined. As mentioned above, this
- address is necessary for your packets to get routed out to the main internet
- instead of just being on your local net. See your local network administrator
- to find out what address to use for the gateway. It shouldn't change each
- time. =Your= assigned IP address nodenumber may change if you get dynamic
- address assignment. I suspect the "gateway" address you're seeing when you
- login is really referring to something different that what you need in this
- field.
-
- Your netadmin will need to tell you what to use for a "subnet
- mask" also. Lots of sites use 255.255.255.0 and this may work for you. You
- really need to find out for sure what is correct though.
-
- Find out if your network is using BOOTP or RARP to assign IP addresses
- dynamically to users. I've no experience with them, but the INSTALL.TXT file
- with the Trumpet Winsock package mentions them. Apparently if one of those
- protocols is used to assign you an IP address, then you just enter the
- appropriate string "bootp" or "rarp" (lower case only, it says) in place of
- your IP address when you setup the Winsock. This should save you manually
- setting the IP address each time. Incidentally, if the TRMPWSK.INI file
- doesn't exist when you load it, Trumpet will provide a startup dialog to fill
- in all the values =including= netmask and default gateway address.
-
- >3. Should the local default page in the mosaic.ini be set to a local
- >page? If so, does anyone know of one for the domain Virginia.EDU?
-
- Doesn't matter. You don't even have to have a default homepage. If you
- define it then it automatically gets downloaded each time you start Mosaic.
- It could be any homepage you like anywhere. Windows Mosaic usually comes
- preconfigured to the NCSA Windows Mosaic Homepage. This server gets
- overloaded lots though and can either timeout or take a long time to
- transfer at heavy traffic periods. If you comment out the statement then you
- can start without anything loaded. Then just select anything you want from
- your menus or hotlist.
-
-
- >4. ???
-
- Besides the Mosaic FAQ, you really need to read through the INSTALL.TXT file
- that comes with the winsock. By the time you skim through it a couple or
- three times you'll find the answers to a lot of your questions. It also gives
- some very useful pointers for setting values for the packet size parameters
- for good performance. For ethernet, the package defaults are usually good.
- For regular SLIP (not compressed CSLIP) it says the TCP MSS value usually
- should be 512. (I believe this is your maximum data packet size.) MTU must
- always be 40 more than TCP MSS. And TCP RWIN normally gives best performance
- if it's an integer multiple of TCP MSS, usually 2 or 3 or 4 times. I =think=
- it has to do with what size blocks are error checked and thus determines what
- size block has to be resent any time there is a checksum failure. Based on
- that assumption I use a smaller value (1024) because I gets lots of errors.
- (TCU's indial modems don't support error correction). If I got good modem to
- modem error correction I would use a larger multiple. Note that I could be
- way off base on this reasoning, I don't know anyone who understands this well
- enough to verify my thoughts.

- Subject: Where to get MS TCP-32 VxD beta Winsock
-
-
- I've posted several time about the new 32-bit protected mode (VxD)
- Winsock - MS TCP-32 - available (free) as a beta release from
- Microsoft. It is still performing very well, and very fast with the
- apps I have tried (Hgopher2.4, QVTnet 3.96, WS_FTP 93.03.25, and
- Trumpet 1.0a). Mosaic 2.02a has its usual problem (sooner or later
- you crash and burn), but that I believe is a Mosaic problem. The
- very latest (as of 3/25/94) Cello (ver?) from Cornell now at least
- loads, but doesn't seem to want to use DNS, so it just sits dumbly
- in its own local home page and can't get out to the web.
- At any rate, the real reason for this is to post where to find it
- because I've been getting a LOT of e-mail asking this same question.
-
- Site: ftp.microsoft.com
- Machine Type: Windows NT
- Login: anonymous
- Password: <your e-mail address>
- Path: /peropsys/WFW/tcpip/vxdbeta
- File: mtcp1b.exe
-
- It's a self-extracting archive. Read the documentation. Follow the
- instructions. Basically, just install it through the "Network Setup"
- icon as you would any other protocol you're adding: [Drivers...],
- [Add protocol...], Unlisted or Updated..., browse to location of files,
- select it, and be sure to select [Setup...] to enter IP address etc.,
- and [DNS...] to specify your name server.
- Hope this is of some help...
